Curious to know a little about our design process? Here's a sneaky peak of what goes on behind closed doors at Dancing With Juniper.
Our Top Values
Dancing With Juniper prides itself on being a sustainable and ethical homewares brand in Australia. As a small and local homewares business in Melbourne it’s really important to us that we give back to the community in ways that supports other local suppliers while also remaining conscious of the environment and our personal impact on beautiful mother earth!
Who Designs our Homewares?
Introducing Hannah – Director, Designer, All Round Creative (& Mum-to Be)! That’s
me…Please don’t mind if I’m tooting my own horn! I established Dancing with Juniper with the ethos of creating playful, relaxed and eclectic pieces to brighten up your home and daily routines. When I’m not designing, sewing or generally keeping the business smooth sailing, you can find me eating cheese around Melbourne or walking my beautiful Staffy, Django.
Where are our Collections Made?
Currently our textiles are sewn right here in Melbourne at a few local manufacturers (sometimes including me!) depending on the product. Most of the fabrics we use are sourced by our printer Next State Print in Thornbury. They are composed from fibres grown, and yarn spun, and woven in China, the Sub-Continent and Europe. Their suppliers both Australian, and international, have a shared adherence to the Modern Slavery Act of 2018.
What is our Design Process?
A collection begins by drawing inspiration from all sorts of places; nature walks, florist trips, books, Instagram, other design spaces and eventually an idea for a theme is formed. Then comes the creating. I like to explore different mediums with a focus on keeping our Melbourne-style homewares quirky, fresh and inspiring.
Once the prints are finalised, Pantone colour palates are put together to colour any digital designs and complement or recolour painted ones. Our designs are then sent off to the printer for sampling. Currently our designs are digitally printed, giving a lovely crisp representation of the original design work that is unlimited by the number of colours we can use.
All fabric designs are also created with an end product in mind and spec sheets are drawn up for our manufacturers that include all the little details; sizes, fabrics, zips, finishes, labels etc. Depending on the product we will then get samples produced which we then use to snap some pics. A new collection is born.
How Ethical are our Homewares?
Sustainability is as important to us as it is to you. Our printer here in Melbourne uses non-toxic, water based, Oeko-tex approved pigment inks, on ethically sourced fabrics. Digital printing is the most sustainable form of fabric printing as it has no waste ink.
Product components are sourced from Australian businesses wherever possible, and we endeavour to keep any nasty plastic stuff to a minimum. We use responsible packaging for your orders; compostable bags and recyclable boxes and shred. Even our tissue paper is responsibly sourced and printed by No Issue Co. that plants trees for every order placed with them. All our notecards and tea towel belly bands are also printed by a fab local Victorian company using responsible inks and recycled paper and card.
All of our products are printed using non-toxic inks and have sustainable packaging
Our love of nature keeps us striving to improve our carbon footprint on an ongoing basis!
Creating special, Australian homewares that will be cherished in your home and provide a little joy to your everyday lives is what we love to do here at DWJ. We love being inspired by our beautiful Aussie nature and strive to do as much as possible to help preserve it. We hope that next time you use or get a delivery of one of our pieces you are reminded of all the love and thought that goes into each piece. Xo
